Judith may have stopped being a healer, but she has a loving husband, two boys and a successful business as a perfume maker. She’s content. So why does she keep having nightmares about falling?

When an accident throws her life into turmoil, she is forced to leave her home and seek the help of strangers. She must face her darkest fears and learn how to fall. She meets two women she has long avoided and meets others she thought she had lost. But most importantly she finds herself.

This metaphysical novel is the third book in The Healer's Shadow Magical Realism Series.

Interview with Zoe Brooks

How would you categorize the Healer's Shadow series?
With difficulty. Obviously as the subtitle says it's a magical realism series. But the books are equally women's fiction, indeed it is feminist fiction. When I started writing the trilogy I was reading Women Who Run With The Wolves, which is a Jungian psychological book about the stages women go though in life. In a way the trilogy is doing that – following Judith through those stages.

And what is the stage that Judith has got to?
Motherhood. She has two boys to whom she is devoted and she is very much in love with her husband. But in order to protect her family she has had to stop being a healer and so deny a vital part of herself. The crisis that ensues is the trigger for the next stage in our heroine's journey. The theme of the relationship of mother and child runs through the book, not just Judith's relationship with her son, but that with the mother she lost when she was ten. Her mother was also a healer and a wise woman. Judith's relationship with women is important – throughout her life she has been aided by a series of mostly older women.

Why create a fantasy setting?
I was inspired by women writers like Angela Carter, Alice Hoffman and Ursula Le Guin, who have shown that speculative or fantasy fiction novels can offer a great way to explore important themes in a way that is entertaining and imaginative. Magical realism is particularly good for this. This book is the most magic realist of the three books.

Do we get to find out the truth about Shadows in this book?
We sure do.

I notice that you are now calling these books a series - it was a trilogy. Does this change mean there are going to be more stories?
Yes, I hope so. Readers can check out my author page (click on my name above) to find out about all my books.

The Company of Shadows The Healer Shadow Magical Realism Series Book 3 edition by Zoe Brooks Literature Fiction eBooks

The protagonist is Judith, an herbalist and healer in a fictional country. Some readers have virtually shelved the books in this series as fantasy, but the author prefers to categorize them as magical realist. She is most similar to Ursula LeGuin, but in this book I noticed a strong similarity to the Aspect novels by Jeri Smith-Ready which begins with Voice of Crow . The Aspect series has been a favorite of mine for their portrayal of shamanism and their powerful support for inter-cultural co-operation. I thought that the previous book in this series, Love of Shadows, stood on its own when I read it, but I now realize that I didn't fully understand the Shadows until I read this book. I enjoyed the gradual unveiling of Brooks' concept of the Shadows over the two books that I've read. What I liked best about The Company of Shadows is the portrayal of magic, its connection to dreams and the unconscious, and the relationship of healers with their animal familiars.

All three books in this series are good. It leaves you wanting a forth book to keep thus story line going
AS USUAL ZOE HAS EXCELLED IN HER WRITING.CAN'T WAIT FOR HER NEXT BOOK .LOVE HER IDEAS AND CONCEPTS.KEEP WRITING ZOE
Such a great read I recommend it to everyone. I enjoyed reading this series very much had a great message for all women to love yourself so that you can love others
The culmination of a tender, hopeful tale, well told in the first person. Well worth your time and money. Start with The Girl In the Glass to get the full effect of the story. Very satisfying read.
It's been several years since she last did any healing. Yet, Judith is seemingly content. She has a family and a successful perfume business. But then a plague hits Pharsis and very few people are surviving. Is there a plant that she can use to help heal? If there is she hasn't found it - is there a cure for the plague?

Then tragedy strikes, one that finds Judith leaving the plague ridden city behind her and heading to the Forest. It will be an arduous journey and costly. But she must do it for the sake of her two boys.

The beautiful woman is dreading this visit. Her previous travels, with her now dead Shadow Sarah, took them to the Forest, but they avoided seeing the 'wise-woman'. A woman that Judith's husband called Grandma. What is it about seeing this wise old woman that Judith dreads? What doesn't she want to face?

Upon reaching their destination the real journey is about to begin. When illness strikes her son Jo, Judith is tested to the limit. The plant she saw in a dream can only be found on a mountain side in her homeland - a place she fears to go back to because it will mean two things - meeting her much hated Aunt and death. Will she be able to make this journey? How much longer can she ignore a conversation with Grandma and how will Peter, an ex-Shadow fit into her new life?

The author brings Judith's tale to a powerful and moving conclusion where many answers are given to questions raised in her previous novels. The would-be healer's life has been one filled with many ups and downs. The hardships she endured continue but there is always that ray of hope that things will turn out well. With continued eloquence, the author has not let her style slip from either the first story Girl in the Glass or second book Love of Shadows. Judith's stoicism, love and loyalty continue to be her support in the face of adversity. With one trial after another, is she able to save her son, find peace with the death of her shadow and finally live a happy and peaceful life?

The final installment to this 'Shadows' trilogy doesn't fail to impress. Judith's trek to her homeland brings the story full circle with an almost quiet ending but one filled with so much passion and optimism that I finished the book with a smile on my face. This trilogy is in a genre that I wouldn't readily pick up but I'm so glad that I took a chance. The author has created a tough, heartbreaking, loving, passionate and thought-provoking world. I have thoroughly enjoyed Judith (Anya's) journey. A highly recommended read.

NB. This book can be read alone but would mean so much more if Book 1 and 2 were read first.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author to review. The opinions expressed are my own and I am not required to give a positive critique.
Great series - about 1/2 way thru this final book and not wanting it to end. Unless the ending really disappoints, this is one of the best series i've read in a long time. Everything - plot, character development, relationships - is handled realistically and the writing is the way i like it - straightforward, no pretensions, clear, and the editing is almost flawless - a few mistakes but many times better than most of the books i've read recently.
I will first say that this genere is not my usual but the healer aspect drew me so I gave it a try.
I read the first two books and have eagerly awaiting this third in the Trilogy. I was not disappointed Zoe Brooks have done it again. This was a wonderful book and answered questions I had from the first two. Judith faced many more sorrows but I see how they eventually gave her the strength to follow her destiny and find closure for her past suffering and finally happiness. I truly enjoyed this trilogy and look forward to reading more of this authors books. I recommend that readers read the first two (Girl in the Glass and Love of Shadows) to get the best benefit of the full story. I don't think you will be disapointed. It has aspects that will attract those that like books about historical ways of life, natural healing , women who have to overcome a male dominated world and also fantasy so there is quite a bit in here for many tastes.
