This is a book that I would characterize as a “History/Mystery” which is a type of fiction that is appreciated by and popular with many. Bradley does an excellent job weaving real history into a fictional plot and the action and characters are great. The only aspect of the book that seems a little tedious (as history/mysteries can occasionally be) is all the detail about how surveying is accomplished. Readers should feel no guilt if they glaze past some of these details – and yet the information about how surveying is accomplished is critical to the story line so don’t skip all of it -- it actually is pretty interesting and informative. Just sometimes there is a bit too much of it. Aside from that, the history and the story line follows logically with exceptional detail in a good way. What makes this piece of fiction special is the character development. All the characters are strong, both good and evil characters and they strike the reader as authentic. There are many surprising twists to the plot. Also, I must offer a disclaimer: I know the author personally although it has been some years ago since we were acquainted and just recently I have discovered his writings. This book should be in every Georgia public library! Highly recommended.Product details

Because you will find it hard to lay it aside for the night. I finished it in one evening, I couldn't bear to wait to find out what happens next and how it all works out.
The characters are realistic and appealing, especially the narrator, a surveyor who gets caught up in far more than he expects. Their flaws and decisions make sense.
The setting rings true as well. As someone bred and born in the rural South, within a hundred miles of all my kin, going back to the 1700's, I tend to cringe at fiction set in the South.
This time, I found myself nodding in agreement. Mr Bradley seems to understand the history, mind-sets, and character traits of the area, past, present, positive and negative.
I can't say too much about the plot without giving away some of the fun. Yes, there is a paranormal element, and yes, there is a romantic element. Both are used in fresh ways and are integral but not central to the plot. The mystery is the plot driver, and the mystery is what kept me reading till the single digit hours, because I had to know what happened to these people before I could sleep.
Bravo, Mr Bradley! I look forward to reading more of your writing.
It is 413 a.m. as I write this review. I have just finished The Dead Hand of Sweeney County after having read all day and most of the night. Dead Hand is the story of a man who must uncover century old secrets to protect a land trust from those who would steal it from the rightful heirs...whoever that might be. Murder, ghosts, family secrets...it sounds as if this should be a gothic novel, but it isn't. Written from a distinctly masculine point of view, it includes details about surveying that would also interest those in the field. I enjoyed the characters, both the living and the dead. SPOILER. he should lose girlfriend if there is a sequel. Trust me.
This was one of the most enjoyable reads I've had recently. Addison Kane is an intriguing character. He is intelligent and adventuresome...a real man's man. At the same time, he is empathetic, loyal, and not afraid to show just the right amount of his "softer side." All of these attributes make him a believable and likable character for both men and women.
The processes involved in surveying were presented in an interesting, easy-to-understand manner, even for the layman (or laywoman). Not being a "spring chicken," I try to master a new task, incorporate a new word into my vocabulary, or learn some tidbit of trivia or useless information each day, so I appreciate the fact that I had a learning experience while enjoying the content of this book.
I'm not normally a fan of historical novels, but The Dead Hand of Sweeney County brought just the right mix of present-day events and history, allowing the reader to be drawn to it gently. The plot and events flowed smoothly throughout this novel, which kept me cheering for Addison.
David Bradley brought this work to a conclusion that left me hoping to read more about the journey of Addison Kane in his quest to reach the life of his dreams. I wish him the best.
First, I need to thank David for the copy he was kind enough to let me read for review purposes. It is always a pleasure to meet a new author and check out talent. Fortunately (or unfortunately) this is a book that doesn’t readily fit into any single category. It has romance, true love, ghosts, history, rich ruthless scum and lost heirs, also, a pretty good primer on how to do surveying. Ok, while that part was very thorough I did kind of skim over the surveying sections (hopefully there won’t be a test later!). Some knowledge of the mechanics of surveying was needed for the story to be completed, but maybe not that much.
The story does start out a little slow, but this is definitely worth the time in order to have the pleasure of meeting Addison, Victoria, Elizabeth, Steve and the rest of the crew. We have a ghost that wants to “Help the Boy” and a greedy family that wants to destroy a good family’s legacy. Unfortunately, we also find out that there were a lot of evil deeds tied up around the good that people do throughout history.
This tale does read like real life, unfortunately even when the good guys win, what we really want might not be what we get. Sometimes in the pursuit of what you truly want, you end up finding out that the person you truly love does not feel the same way about you. So, even though the family legacy was saved and the bad guys ended up in jail, the typical ride off into the sunset happy ending didn’t happen. Some people were hurt that didn’t deserve to be hurt, but many people were helped, including “the boy”.
