When Gary loses his job and becomes a stay-at-home dad he knows it will change his life, but he could never have guessed the ways it would change life for all those around him. Alexandra, his wife, returns to practicing law—and returns to wearing the kind of sexy business attire she knows will bring the attention she craves.

And then there are Gary and Alexandra’s best friends, Maggie and Adam. Adam has always had a thing for Alexandra, and he uses after work happy hours to flirt with her mercilessly. Meanwhile back at home, Maggie teaches Gary the ropes of being an at-home parent and the two grow closer than ever.

Will these two couples cross lines and break their vows, or will they come together and agree upon an arrangement that fulfills everyone’s desires? When two couples become so intertwined, what does domestic bliss really mean?

Domestic Bliss A Tale of Two Couples edition by Kirsten McCurran Kenny Wright Literature Fiction eBooks

I have enjoyed Kirsten McCurran's work in the past, especially "Because He's Watching" and "Hot Dates 2." This novella is edgier than those books, but still intensely erotic. The plot involves two couples who have been friends for some time, Gary & Lexi and Maggie & Adam. Events are set in motion when Gary loses his job, and Lexi persuades him to become a stay-at-home dad so she can reenter the work world and escape what for her has become the stultifying world of at-home mom. Gary, of course, is completely at sea in this new arrangement, and Maggie begins to visit often, giving him the support and self-confidence he needs. The two of them grow closer, and McCurran does a nice job of showing their complimentary personalities, which are in marked contrast to their spouses' more hard-driving personalities. Not surprisingly, Lexi and Adam begin to share after-work drinks, although their relationship doesn't feel as organic as Gary and Maggie's. Inevitably, the cross-couple closeness becomes more than simply friendship, and the four characters have to find a way to either embrace the complexities or see both marriages threatened. McCurran negotiates these complexities well, and the plot, in general, feels both fresh and inevitable. Personally, I found Lexi and Adam to be often manipulative and off-putting, but McCurran doesn't let them become stereotypes. The characters are all nicely nuanced for a novella, and in the end I found their stories to be enjoyable and fun. It's not McCurran's best, but she is certainly in the top tier of authors in this genre.

Domestic Bliss A Tale of Two Couples edition by Kirsten McCurran Kenny Wright Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Very much worth the read and pretty hot towards the end. It is a little slow getting started but once it did... Hot.

I became disappointed in Alexandra as the story went on but it is great to see such loving spouses able to share to get more.
Another well written. hot book from Kirsten. The characters were interesting and there was a fair amount of angst. It doesn't break any new ground, but still a fun read.
I am not sure where the author lost me. I believe it was when Alexandra and Adam failed to cross the line in the car. That is when it changed from a hotwife story to a swingers book.
Not that swinger stories aren't hot but I love the tension and worry adulterous or semi adulterous sex brings the story.
I enjoy reading about a woman, wife, getting into a situation where she gets unbelievably aroused and simply can't stop the impending sexual hook up, goes off like a bomb but has regrets afterwards.
Her guilt finally forces her to confess to her husband and her forgives her after long soul searching between the two of them.
Kirsten McCurran routinely takes my breath away. Her stories are almost always about sleeping with someone who isn't your partner while being totally consensual about the whole thing. Domestic Bliss is no exception. In this case, it's two couples who end up in pretty much every combination with each other.

I don't need to set up the story, because you've already read the description above. What I will tell you is that this is one story that will get you in the mood over and over again. Quite possibly the best writer of erotic fiction today.
Call it an "accidental swapping" or "inadvertent swingers" novel. Kristen McCurran as always does a really good job with the writing and the pacing of the scenes. The thing I found distracting was the author's decision to tell the story from four points of view. Writing an orgy from all points of view creates a somewhat disjointed narrative that, for this reader, kinda takes away from the story. It just didn't click with me.

What I really liked was the story of Gary, the stay at home dad, hooking up with Maggie, the stay-at-home mom. McCurran's use of the character's relative restraint with eachother add to the sexual tension. Good book.
Apparently, different readers can react quite differently. Many reviewers seem almost to be complaining about the slow buildup that precedes the main event in "Domestic Bliss", while having nothing but praise for the "last third". I have to admit that the author does an amazing job with an extended scene in an Atlantic City hotel. But for me, the heart of the story is really what precedes that.

Here we have a pair of seemingly mismatched couples Maggie, who enjoys her domestic role, is married to Adam, an assertive and flirtatious jerk. Alexandra is Adam's flirty female counterpart but is married to nice guy Gary. When Gary loses his job, Alexandra jumps at the chance to return to the job she held as a lawyer prior to the arrival of their son, convincing Gary to become a househusband. Alexandra and Adam (who has had a thing for her ever since the two couples met 3 years prior in Lamaze class) are soon doing after-work happy hour together, and the sexual sparks start flying. Meanwhile, Maggie is helping Gary learn the ropes of child care and housework via her daily visits, and before long, the connection between them intensifies. There is a wonderful scene where they wake up from "pleasant" dreams, having fallen asleep on the couch. The sparks that develop here are of a different character but equally intense.

So we know where this is going, but the author has created a real challenge for herself. The swapped couples are both well on their way to cheating (opinions may differ on just where that line is crossed). Nobody wants to end their marriage and perhaps the solution lies in some sort of arrangement. But neither couple really knows what's going on with the other. The solution the author comes up with leads to what for me is the climax of the entire story, when things begin to be revealed in the most delicious way. Ironically, the vehicle for this revelation turns out to be a silly game of chance -- a card game proposed by Adam. Ironic because I typically dislike stories in which gambling or some such random process is used in this way. But it works here. The actual game is complicated and I didn't follow it all that well. But no matter. This was the wonderful moment in which all 4 participants began to see that they might be able to satisfy their intense desires without losing their marriages. And now the author does something wonderful. We thought this was basically another swinging story (which Ms McCurran does beautifully). But then Adam, of all people, discovers something about himself which bends things toward the hotwife genre while simultaneously turning him into someone for whom I could suddenly feel sympathy.

Okay, the scene in the hotel suite is hot, no question, and McCurran describes it masterfully. But for me, it will always be about the gradual disclosure, the reveal, the moment of decision. And it is because that aspect is done so well here that I really love this story.
