Award-winning contemporary poems of country and city life.

Rus in Urbe edition by James Lawless Religion Spirituality eBooks

Rus in Urbe is an interesting collection of poetry that truly does as its title suggests, gives the reader a bit of the country created within a city of words. Good examples of this are the poems Changing Forms — “…and there a butterfly hovered around an apple tree; it pirouetted and tantalized, its wings fluttering like eyelashes …” and Choices — “…yet sometimes the mountain track is too crowded for me with its trees and flowers and birds who peck inquisitively at me…”

This little book is a nice break from a hectic life and will be enjoyed by poetry fans and novices alike.

Rus in Urbe edition by James Lawless Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

It seems James Lawless can handle any genre tossed his way. As expected, his style is radiant, sings, and makes for a very fine read. Irish author and poet James Lawless was born in Dublin, read Irish and Spanish at the University College Dublin, followed by honors studies in Communications and Cultural Studies at Dublin City University where he earned his Masters degree. He has been both a secondary schools teacher and a guest lecturer as well as volunteering for social concerns organizations. His highly successful career has been molded by not only his gifts as a poet, a writer of short stories, and a novelist (he is widely published) but also by his concerns with humanitarian issues and political histories. He currently has homes in both County Kildare and West Cork.

Having read and reviewed several of the novels of James Lawless and falling into their spells he weave, it is a pleasure to see how he speaks about his world in a few words he assembles as poems. The range of his observations and the haring of those thoughts with us covers nature in its wonders, family, unnoticed thing, Irish works, songs - all delivered with a sorcerer's gift with spinning words into magic. He divides is poems into tow sections as suggested by the title - RUS and IN URBE (`rus in urbe' - an illusion of countryside created by a building or garden within a city. The phrase, which is Latin and means literally 'country in the city'). But his poems speak for themselves far better than a dissection

ROOM
To the memory of Emily Dickinson

How great it is
to have a place to throw
behind my back
all waste - all offal
of my human race;

it leaves the table clear
for circumference to appear

to see the atom
in the
in-between space.

SACRIFICE
to the memory of Jimmy

He bought Odhams Encyclopaedias on HP,
leatherbound, to be venerated by us.
Weekly payments substituted for the Friday fruit.
We consumed the pages, drank the ink.
The debt was cleared on his deathday.

He lies in the soil as I watch the covers peeling,
and in the pages I see the yellowing of his skin
beside the new Britannica.

THE CUT AND THRUST OF LIFE

Before the hernia operation
the surgeon adjusted the sac.
It should hang so so, should it not?
All the desires,
all the times of individualizing
one's own genitals
reduced to this
a mathematical proposition.

CARRYING FORWARD

The hairs of my fingers
are caught by the sun
like some spidery creatures
and I behold the shape,
the same jutting bones,
the same freckles
which I tried to deny
and the deep caves of knuckles,
and the thin river meandering
from the wrist is his arm,
and the broad mountain
is his torso
peaked by a grey capped head
acting as an awning
for a spectacled face,
and two craggy promontories
at either end
are tunnels blocked
from the hurt of years
and I recoil,
as they must have done
who beheld Lazarus,
and I cry Father!

Such a rich spectrum of poetry from a poet whose heart and soul dwells securely in Ireland. He deserves a very wide audience. Grady harp, August 14
Rus in Urbe is a delightful book of poetry and my second book by James Lawless. Having previously read Peeling Oranges I was thrilled to see another side of Lawless' writing.

Lawless' poems are well written and provide the reader with a glimpse into the authors view of the world. While I am not well versed in the subtle nuances that make a "great poet" I can tell you that I enjoyed what he wrote and both read them again and use his poetry in my classroom as an example of what my students should aspire to.
This book of poems by James Lawless is the very definition of “short but sweet.” While one could easily polish off the entirety of the book within a couple of hours, it is a far more superior reading experience when taken slowly. The imagery is worthy of reflection, and the vocabulary itself is occasionally worthy of investigation for those who wish to find additional hidden meanings in certain lines.

There is one potential drawback to this book, though in many ways it is not a drawback at all. It would appear as if a few of the poems are written in traditional Gaelic, or a language of similar nature. Those who understand the language will probably get something out of this. Those who do not understand the language will likely find themselves wondering if they might be missing out on something that might be lost in translation between languages. In fact, the very first bilingual poem included (“Monogamy”) appears to have an entire stanza in the alternate version that is not in the English version. This may be explained by the nature of the language itself, as “Ghost Road” has some lines which are much shorter in the English version.

The title of this book seems somewhat fitting, given the separation into two parts (“Rus” and “In Urbe”). While there is not always a clear differentiation in the poems of those with more rural themes and those with themes that are more urban, there do seem to be more poems in the second half of the book that pay homage to urban settings. Not only are these poems relatively urban, but they are rather urbane as well. Lawless appears able to write in more than one blanket style, changing his style as he sees fit to suit various works.

Sometimes, the lack of clear differentiation makes one stop to think. For instance, one may wonder why “City Boy” was chosen as the first selection in “Rus.” Yet, somehow, the choice fits well. None of these poems really feels misplaced, even when logic might dictate that they should. All-in-all, this collection of poems is well put together, and can be enjoyed by those who love poetry or even just mildly appreciate it. This is truly quality work.
