In the last two decades, digital technologies have made it possible for anyone with a computer and an Internet connection to rapidly and inexpensively self-publish a book. Once a stigmatized niche activity, self-publishing has grown explosively. Hobbyists and professionals alike have produced millions of books, circulating them through e-readers and the web. What does this new flood of books mean for publishing, authors, and readers? Some lament the rise of self-publishing because it tramples the gates and gatekeepers who once reserved publication for those who met professional standards. Drawing on eight years of research and interviews with more than eighty self-published writers, Mass Authorship avoids the polemics, instead showing how writers are actually thinking about and dealing with this brave new world. Timothy Laquintano compares the experiences of self-publishing authors in three distinct genres—poker strategy guides, memoirs, and romance novels—as well as those of writers whose self-published works hit major bestseller lists. He finds that the significance of self-publishing and the challenge it presents to traditional publishing depend on the aims of authors, the desires of their readers, the affordances of their platforms, and the business plans of the companies that provide those platforms.
In drawing a nuanced portrait of self-publishing authors today, Laquintano answers some of the most pressing questions about what it means to publish in the twenty-first century How do writers establish credibility in an environment with no editors to judge quality? How do authors police their copyrights online without recourse to the law? How do they experience as a publishing platform? And how do they find an audience when, it sometimes seems, there are more writers than readers?

This book reads like a thesis on the many aspects of authorship: the "new" versus the "traditional" forms of publishing, copyright, among other topics.I liked that this book has interviews with different types of authors - how they managed to publish their stories and the huddles they go through. It is definitely in depth for readers interested in the topic as a scholarly read. However, I also wished that it could attract my attention for a longer while, for I had to divide my reading up into many days to get it through.

This is a "scholarly" book about the publication world today, concentrating on both self-publishing and traditional publishing; although most of it seems to concentrate on self-publishing and writing websites, such as Wattpad. I say seems because I admit my mind wandered quite a bit while reading. The book is not difficult to comprehend, mind you, but you must be enthusiastic about the various topics Timothy Laquintano covers. I was not, which surprised me. One of the topics I highly skimmed was about the authors who write about poker playing. For anyone into that, this book is definitely for you! I truly wished my interest level had been higher about poker writing and everything else. Nevertheless, this book did confirm my belief that writers are better off staying focused on their writing; not on publication or book sales or ratings or reviews; or anything else but writing.

You don't need to be a professor, as I am, to find this book useful, smart and well-researched. My undergraduates found it an accessible and helpful guide to the new landscape of digital publishing. Laquintanto demystifies self-publishing, using detailed case studies that illustrate main insights, such as how ebook pricing is volatile and largely author-controlled. Chapter four, about , demonstrates how some self-pub authors used the metadata generates to time new releases to maximize exposure to audiences, and to gather sales toward bestseller status. Self-pub and traditional (i.e., print-based) authors alike will find this book insightful. I recommend this book!
